Typography is a blend of art and science, language and technology, plus a dash of math and a great deal of passion. Teaching typography requires all of these elements plus an almost evangelical love of letterforms and the desire to act as a spirit guide for students through vast fields of terminology, classifications, new media, reproduction methods, and more.
Ellen Lupton is a graphic designer, curator, writer, critic, and educator known for her love of typography. She is the Betty Cooke and William O. Steinmetz Design Chair at Maryland Institute College of Art and has written or contributed to over three dozen books on design and typography. Letterform Archive’s Dean of Type West Grendl Löfkvist and Education Director Angela Riechers will join her for a spirited discussion of where type education has been, where we are now, and where it’s going, moderated by the Archive’s Associate Curator and Editorial Director Stephen Coles.
