Designing a typeface is very different from releasing a font. A finished font is, in essence, a piece of software — and you first need to ensure it meets technical requirements to function reliably wherever it’s used, and then make it available to customers and users in the right way.
In this workshop, you’ll learn the essential skills of font mastering and production, from preparing your files for export to thoroughly testing your fonts in real-world environments. We’ll cover OpenType specifications and common user expectations, including style naming and linking, vertical metrics and centering, as well as the creation and implementation of OpenType layout features. You’ll also learn how to identify and troubleshoot technical issues using industry-standard resources.
You will also learn all about how fonts are published and licensed, either through distributors, online platforms, or your own foundry site. We’ll discuss the ins and outs of pricing, legal protections, and the licensing terms needed for different types of customers and uses.
By the end of the course, you’ll have mastered and tested your fonts and be ready to put them in users’ hands as polished, retail-ready products.
